Oh my, that's a very yellow house

Av Per postad i Mordheim | 12 mars, 2010 | 3 kommentarer

It‘s a bit hard to believe that the house on the left started out with the same color as the one on the right. Either that or my memory is failing and I painted it with the wrong color. But I am pretty sure it’s right because the only color I'm running out of is Iyanden Darksun.

And for all you guys out there who paint miniature houses, do you find it as boring as me to paint the base colors?

Look at me, I'm all yellow and ugly.

@cianty So you just work the color up from black with thin layers of lighter and lighter greys. I might try that technique on my next house.

And writing down my color choices… hehe, I know I should, but I also know I will think “What the hell, I can remember my color choices” :)

Ha ha, yeah, that's pretty yellowy indeed. :)

But that doesn‘t have to be a bad thing. Often times when you paint the base colour is the weirdest off looking colour, but as you apply new layers it all comes together and starts to make sense. That is, if you know what you’re doing. Since you have this brownish tone on the chapel as well I guess it does make sense.

Not all at! As I described in that tutorial for the Blue Wolf Inn after the black base coat I don‘t paint a thick layer of colour. On the black I apply a washed down dark grey that is brushed on the wall (in circling movements), so very early on I start creating the plaster/stucco effect, using lighter and lighter greys. I guess I would have used Bestial Brown or something and applied that on the black base coat this way and then switched to grey to achieve the effect of the chapel. But that’s all a lot of trial and error. And that‘s why I always write down my colour choices. I just can’t remember them until I have done it a hundred times.

Anyways, I am sure the tower will look great once it‘s finished. The yellowy tone doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing. This way it will look a bit different than the chapel but if you still go with the grey/white for the next layers it will still look sufficiently similar to tie them together. I look forward to the next photos!
