This will unfortunately be a pretty short post because I need some sleep soon. But here goes!
Priming with black AND white spray
For the first time in years I did something new with my priming. I tried the prime 2k technique best explained by Roman at Massive Voodoo. The short version of it is, spray the model with black primer. Let it dry. Spray a little bit with white primer. And then you have something like this:

Black in the nooks and crannies and white on the top surfaces is what I was aiming for.
Painting bricks
- Start with 50/50 Vallejo Terracotta and GW Macharius Solar Orange.
- Mix in some Vallejo Iraqi Sand or similar (like GW Bleached Bone) in the base color and add a highlight or two on the edges of the bricks.
- Wash the bricks with Vallejo Sepia Shade, mostly at the sides where they connect to the ground.
- More layers of wash – GW Gryphonne Sepia this time and add it all over the bricks but try to avoid painting over the highlights.
- Optional: Devlan Mud and Badab Black to give the bricks a more weathered look.
Off topic – Repainted the wood
I wasn‘t happy with the wood and the stone walls so I worked a lot on them to give them a bit more contrast between each other so that they don’t blend into one big grey/brown wall. It‘s not perfect but it’s a lot better than before.

An evening of painting and four models half-way to being completed makes me pretty pleased because I normally paint very very slow. So this was an improvement in speed and now they only need some more highlights and they will look good enough for being caught in the crossfire in the next game.

From left you have cabin boy, navigator, surgeon and a cook.

Still the same cabin boy, navigator, surgeon and cook.

It‘s a bit hard to believe that the house on the left started out with the same color as the one on the right. Either that or my memory is failing and I painted it with the wrong color. But I am pretty sure it’s right because the only color I'm running out of is Iyanden Darksun.
And for all you guys out there who paint miniature houses, do you find it as boring as me to paint the base colors?

Look at me, I'm all yellow and ugly.

Have spent the evening painting on the Games Workshop Fortified Manor House and it is really tedious work as it seems like you can go on painting forever and ever. But then again it is a really nice and detailed house so the result is quite rewarding.
I still have a bit more to paint but it's getting there. Added more variation to the roof tiles after being inspired by cianty's way of painting roofs.
I‘ve also watched Sweden take it’s first Gold in the olympics, yay! Thank you Charlotte Kalla.

Sorry about the low quality, a quick snap from my iPhone.

Another snap showing the color variation on the roof tiles.

I‘ve been painting on the Ogre this and yesterday evening and I’m making good progress. But if it went pretty smooth without any problems yesterday, It was the other way around today.

Facing the face
I struggled a lot with the face! After 1 hour of painting on the face, it was more or less purple. My plan was to make the area around the eyes a bit purple but it ended up all wrong. So then I had to fix the situation and it took a while but finally it came out nicely after a lot of different thin layers of paint. I always mix my colors with a lot of water because many thin layers makes the end result better but a medium would probably work better than water for mixing.
On to the metal parts
The sword and the armor was first highlighted with small amounts of Gunmetal Grey from Vallejo followed by Mithril Silver from GW. I then washed the armor with Badab Black in specific places and a little bit of Devlan Mud
The sword got a lot of coats of Badab Black and Devlan Mud before I finished it with a little bit of Baal Red. I didn‘t want the sword to look all shiny, it doesn’t suit an Ogre.
Yesterdays pants
Nothing out of the ordinary, started with Falcon Turquoise (Vallejo) and Astronomican Grey (GW) then washed with Asurmen Blue on the turquoise and Badab Black on the grey parts.
Continued highlighting with the base colors and then mixed them with lighter turquoise/white and painted a couple of highlights. Tedious but no special skills needed.
Still to come
Still have all the orange parts, the brown hat and shoes left to paint. And probably a million small details that I've missed…

I thought I would share how my Mordheim gang is coming along. It‘s progressing at a meager speed mainly cause I paint way to seldom and I’m also trying to get a drivers licence about 10 years after everyone else.
The Big Man
Started painting on my old Ogre model that I‘m very fond of. I think I will work a lot on this one before I’m satisfied and will try to get some nice blends on it later on. Right now it's only base colors and a lot of washes on top of that.
It really is a wonderfully sculpted model (from the 80‘s or 90’s) with a lot of small details from small holes in all of his clothing to a faulty strap on one of his armor plates. His socks halfway down his pants, his pants torn into pieces, all in all a worn Ogre hired by a couple of brats.
And I like his pose, leaning on the big sword, looking a bit tired of fighting and more interested in leaning back at an inn, pouring down a cold mead from his tankard.
The Gang
I‘m pleased how the gang works out as a group, they actually look like a gang of fancy pants, ready to bring havoc upon Totte’s filthy mob.
(Come on Totte, upload a gang photo to your blog so I can link to it ;)

Started painting on another character for my gang the other day and here is the result so far. It is a fairly easy model to paint – I covered almost the whole model i Boltgun Metal, washed it with Badab Black and then highlighted with Silver.
I then added bronze to the rims of the armor to make it a bit more interesting to look at. I will continue with the highlighting of the turquoise and yellow parts another day.

So… me and Totte has started another stupid project – Mordheim. I’ve bought a bunch of stuff needed to play, maybe a bit more than needed. Anyway, I’m going to blog about the progress.
A short painting how-to
These are the first models I've painted for many years and this is the first step towards getting them finished. I thought I would try to share the process I use when painting in a couple of easy steps.
1. Putting on the primer
Begin with spraying the model with a coat of black primer. I use the black from Games Workshop but any good matt primer would work fine. Just keep the layer thin, preferably spraying on multiple thin layers instead of a thick one.
2. Basic colors
When primed I start painting all areas of the model with basic colors. Begin from the inside (often the face) and work your way out. You can use the foundation colors from Citadel in this step because they cover up nicely. But I actually used colors from Vallejo. Thanks Totte for letting me use your paints.
3. Washing
Now for the easy and lovely part. Drench the model with a Citadel Wash. I use Devlan Mud most of the time but others can be nice too, like Badab Black for armor.
Be generous when applying the wash otherwise you will not see much of a result.
4. Highlighting
Begin highlighting all obvious edges. You could probably do this before and after the Wash for an even better result.
That’s all I’ve done with the models so far and I think they look pretty decent so far. What do you think?
